Festivals of Light - Winter Assembly 2011 PDF Print E-mail

On Thursday, the 22nd of December, our school hosted a Winter Concert with "Festival of Light" as the theme.  It turned out to be a fantastic successs. The day started off with a coffee morning, hosted by the PTA (Parents Teachers Association) and parents were invited to wander around our new school, which we are all delighted to be in.  A huge number of parents arrived in the hall to see their children perform. It was incredibly special for Colette, Tom and all the teachers and staff to see that number of parents come to visit our new school building, to show their support to us and to see their children perform. It was a wonderful and joyous way to end the 1st term of the school year and we all feel thrilled that we are well settled into our new premises.

All the staff of Esker ETNS would like to give all the parents a huge thank you for their continued support and we look forward very much to seeing you at other events in the near future.

Each class performed a song or poem or acted out a story about a different festival of light;

Junior Infants Green & Red - All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.
Senior Infants Green - Feliz Navidad.
Senior Infants Red/Junior Infants Blue - Twinkle twinkle Little Star.
1st Class Green - Gung Hay Fat Choy ( Chinese New Year)
1st Class Red - Baisakhi Song (Sikh Festival)
2nd Class Green & Red - Hanukkah Poem.
3rd Class Green - Eid Mubarak  (Eid Al-Adha)
3rd Class Red - Harvest Poem (Thanksgiving)
4th Class -  Somewhere over the Rainbow (Hopes & Dreams)
5th Class - The Story of Rama and Sita and Happy Diwali: A Punjabi Song
6th Class - Irish Aid: Millenium Goals and Feed the World (song)

All the performances were fantastic. The teachers and children put in  a huge amount of work. A big well done to All.  Tom and Deirdre who played the keyboard and fiddle respectively did a fantastic job, so well done to you.

Colette formally welcomed all our parents, visitors and guests to our new school.  The first time we have been in a school building on our own since our inception in 2007.

The Big Move PDF Print E-mail

At last the big move is on. Esker Educate Together is moving into its new (temporary) building on Friday December the 9th 2011. The building is a two storey 16 classroom building located on Adamstown Avenue, just past Adamstown Community College. The entrance to the new school is on Adamstown Avenue. On entering Adamstown from the Newcastle Rd you take a right turn instead of a left turn at the T-junction. Or if you are approaching Adamstown from the link road then you continue straight on Adamstown Avenue instead of turning left at Londis.

This is the first time that we are in our own building all together and as a school we are very excited about this.  €50,000 worth of new furniture and fittings has been ordered and will be delivered to the new building before we move in.  Teachers are very busy packing up everything, getting ready for the big move.

In order to facilitate the move, there will be no school for your children on Friday 9th December. All the physical moving will be done by the staff and a removal company on that day.

Thursday the 8th December will be the last day for our junior children in Adamstown Castle and our senior children in Lucan East. Friday the 9th the school is closed for the children and on Monday the 12th of December all Esker children and staff will turn up to the new building, Esker Educate Together National School, Adamstown Avenue.

The bus will collect and drop children as normal and bring all children to the new school from Monday 12th December onwards.

Media Statement from Educate Together RE: State commitment to multi-denominational schools PDF Print E-mail

Educate Together Welcomes State Commitment to Accelerate Establishment of Multi-Denominational Schools

Educate Together, the multi-denominational education charity, has welcomed the publication of the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Ireland. In its UPR response Ireland has committed to “Accelerate its efforts to establish a national network of schools that guarantee equality of access to children regardless of religious, social or cultural beliefs’.

Educate Together has been working for over 30 years to establish a truly national network of multi-denominational schools in Ireland. Its legal charter obliges it to operate schools that provide equality of access and esteem to children "irrespective of social, cultural or religious background." The parallel with the UN recommendation is striking. Although the patron body now has 60 such schools, they still only account for 2% of primary schools in Ireland. 96% of Ireland’s primary schools are under religious patronage.

Paul Rowe, Educate Together CEO, is encouraged by the commitment made ‘Everyone involved in Irish education acknowledges that the current availability of multi-denominational schools of the Educate Together model is far below where it should be. However progress on addressing this lack of diversity has been agonizingly slow. The lack of this choice in many parts of the country is a growing problem for families. "The current Forum on Patronage and Plurality is an important step forward and the commitment of the State in its UPR response is very significant. Ireland has committed itself to accelerating the process. Many parents in Ireland who have been waiting for years to access multi-denominational education, will hold the state to this commitment – and now the world is watching".

Ireland’s UPR report recommends a series of steps the state must take in relation to its improving human rights record and associated legislation. In the education sector, recommendations were made on access on an equal footing for people with disabilities, the Traveller community and people from minority religions. Particular reference was made to eradicating discriminatory practice in Irish law citing education legislation as an example. Ireland has also, in its report response, given a commitment to ratify the UNESCO Convention Against Discrimination in Education.

Other significant commitments made include the continued implementation of the CERD (Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination) recommendations. Ireland has made little progress on implementing these over the last 10 years.

Educate Together is currently applying to open 12 new primary schools in the next two years. It is hoped that the commitment by the state to the UPR will be proven by the establishment of these schools with Educate Together’s patronage.
