Esker ETNS

There was cause for great celebration in Esker ETNS yesterday as the school was declared winners of the All Ireland Green Schools Water Award.

The presentation, which was sponsored by Irish Water, was made on Thursday 3rd of May by the Director of An Taisce, Dr Michael O’ Mahony.

Principal Colette Kavanagh, Deputy Principal Gemma Stokes and three representatives of the Esker ETNS Green School Committee, Shivam, Ainhoa and Thomas attended a ceremony in the Weston Hotel to receive the award. The school was presented with a magnificent glass trophy in the shape of a water droplet, a cheque for €2,000 and the school’s third Green Flag.

The Esker Green School Committee, which is composed of children from all classes, has been working for the past two years to achieve their third Green Flag for water conservation. The committee, under the guidance of Gemma Stokes, led the whole school in a number of measures designed to reduce water consumption in the school. Water Warriors regularly patrolled the school to raise awareness of wasteful water consumption and remind children of a number of measures such as the “One Push is Enough“ rule for handwashing.

Daniel, a 6th class committee rep commented, “I see now that if we all make a small change, we can really make a difference. We are lucky to have clean water, so we shouldn’t waste it.”  Gemma declared, “I am over the moon that all the hard work and commitment from the children has been recognised. Our kids may be small but their message is BIG.”

Huge congratulations to Gemma and her wonderful Green School Committee who were instrumental in our school being awarded our third Green Flag for Water Conservation. Not only that, the inspector from An Taisce (Green Schools) was so impressed with the work done in the school that we have been named "Primary Water School of the Year, Dublin Region" for our work. Members of the Committee along with Colette and Gemma will attend a special award ceremony in the Hilton Hotel Kilmainham on 3rd May , where we will be awarded with a trophy and a cheque for €750. Thanks also to Paula and the Global Citizenship Committee, to Niamh and her Senior Infants who performed Eddie The Penguin for the inspector and to Heidi who helped Gemma with the committee. Most of all to the children in the school who care so much about how we treat our planet and most especially to the the hardworking, dedicated committee and to Gemma who together showed the passion they feel and the knowledge that they have to make this world a better place for all of us to live. Fantastic work all round. Peggy our Chairperson and Vivienne our Climate Change artist are also thrilled with the news and congratulate everyone involved.

Revised school closure details

Following our recent unexpected closures we have taken the decison not to close the school early on Friday as pre advised, The teachers, SNAs and ancillary staff have  taken the Child Proection module during the time when the school was closed. However, we have no option but to close the school on Monday 12th as the whole teaching staff have to attend training in the new langiage curriculum in Dublin West Education Centre. This unfortunaltely  cannot be cancelled or postponed.
Colette

A very big thank you to our parents, grandparent,s teachers and children who turned out today to help to get the school ready for opening tomorrow.. And the biggest thank you of all to David Stanley, of Roadstar Paving  and his two helpers who brought two diggers and sorted out the worst of the problem for us. Roadstar Paving worked for a couple of hours here (and all weekend in other schools) and didn't charge us at all for their time and expertise. We are extremely grateful and ask that you keep the  company in mind if you are looking to have paving done in the future.
