My 5th class students recently took part in an exciting and eye-opening experience as part of the STEMpathy project, which combines Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math with a focus on empathy. In this hands-on activity, the students wore special goggles to impair their vision and gloves to limit their dexterity. This challenge allowed them to step into the shoes of individuals who are older or disabled, offering them a deeper understanding of the difficulties these individuals face in everyday life.
As they navigated tasks with impaired abilities, the students learned not just about the science behind the technology but also about the importance of empathy in designing solutions that can improve the lives of others. The STEMpathy project was a powerful way for the students to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way, while also building a greater sense of compassion and social awareness.
