On 1st March, after several weeks of remote learning, we welcomed all the children from Senior Infants Red back to the classroom. It was so nice to see all the happy, smiling faces and we were excited to learn about a brand new topic in Aistear: Space! Here are a few photos of their first week back.
To infinity and beyond!
Our Aistear role play area was transformed into an International Space Station, a Lunar Module and a NASA control panel. Here, the children launched astronauts into space, by communicating with each other from the different zones. Some even encountered aliens and asteroids along the way!
Beebots support children in learning computing skills and applying computational thinking. Here, the children sent their "spacebots" to different planets and stars. Some of creatures even danced along the Milky Way!
Construction requires a lot of teamwork, compromising and problem solving. This is where our engineers build rockets, space stations and... Mandalorians!
The Sand Area:
In the sand area, the children explored different planets using their space rovers and collected sand and rock samples.
Here, the children turned themselves into astronauts for our wonderful display!
Making a balloon rocket: Using a balloon, a straw and some thread, the children made predictions about what might happen and then observed the balloon rocket blast off! What made the rocket move?
Outdoor learning: Maths Trail
Taking advantage of outdoor learning during Covid times, Senior Infants Red really challenged themselves and worked with their partner to work out the answers on the Maths Trail.
The Life Cycle of a Frog.
The children have been learning about and observing the life cycle of a frog: From frog spawn, to tadpoles, to frogs!
Well done to Senior Infants Red. What an amazing performance, they've done themselves very proud!
Season's Greetings from Esker Staff Band!
Happy Halloween from Senior Infants Red!
Congratulations to Mia, who won 'Pin the Nose on the Witch!'
Coding in Maths
Senior Infants might be having lots of fun playing with Beebots, but they are actually learning the very basics of computer programming. Beebots provide a great starting point for coding, while also learning control, directional language and even number formation!
Make a monster science experiment
Whats happens to the balloon when you mix vinegar and bicarbonate soda together inside the bottle? Let's find out...
This month's Aistear topic: The Vet!
Throughout October, Senior Infants played as customers, veterinary surgeons and nurses; taking care of animals by conducting x-rays, providing vaccinations and bandages and constructing animal crates.
Working together safely in our pods...
This was our last week learning about the farm in Aistear. Next week's Aistear topic is the Vet!
Friday Learn Together Assemblies
Assemblies may be a little different this year, but every bit as enjoyable to be greeted by Colette, Gemma and Catherine on Friday mornings!
Shake it off!
Senior Infants Red took a well-deserved brain break after some hard work during literacy.
Senior Infants Red working hard at Maths.
The children used playdough to practise number formation. Great work!
Playtime in the yard: Duck Duck Goose.
Aistear: Life on the Farm.
Senior Infants worked in their pods as builders, shopkeepers and farmers. They learned about farm life through play and exploration.
Good morning parents and children of Senior Infants Red and welcome back to a new school year. It was really lovely to see all the happy, smiling faces of children starting their first day of Senior Infants and I look forward to getting to know you all more!
Below are a few pictures of our first week back, we've been very busy already!

Learning all about farm life during Aistear:
Wow, look at the fantastic work children have been doing at home. Thank you so much for all the lovely photos of your work. I love to see the learning you are doing on our theme of Space.
So this is our last plan before we take a two week break for Easter holidays. We want to be sure that we all take some time to relax a bit over the next two weeks without too much work to get done every day. Use these two weeks to get creative, do activities the children enjoy or learn a new skill. Don't forget you can watch School on Tv on RTE2 every day from 11am-12pm.
We want to be sure you have access to some resources that you can use if you'd like so we would recommend the Storyline online app and Starfall app. Storyline Online has a lot of the most popular picture books that are read aloud. Starfall has a huge range of literacy and numeracy activities. You can download the apps onto any device or simply use the websites.
After Easter we will be up and running on Seesaw our new online learning platform. I'm looking forward to connecting with you all through Seesaw and getting a chance to see the activities the children are doing at home.
Feel free to send on some of the children's activities tomorrow if they would like to see them posted on our blog.
Talk to you all after the Easter holidays. Stay safe.
