The children in Esker are really interested in learning about Maths. Maths is not only a hugely important subject that the children learn about but they also use their Maths skills and knowledge as part of Science, Technology, Engineering/design and make. They even use maths to complete fun activities such as baking or gardening and put on their maths eyes to take part in maths trails around the school and local community.
Using Our Maths Skills and Knowledge
Third Class used their maths knowledge to create 3D shapes.
Fifth Class took their measuring and estimating skills outside for Tree Week and measured the height of a tree and estimated the age of the tree.
First Class came up with a very novel way to measure their throws by measuring them in jumps.
Second Class also took their measuring skills outside. First they made their own metre sticks using string and a metre stick for reference and brought their homemade metre sticks outside to the yard to measure different items that they found.
Third Class used their maths skills to analyse and record data while investigating the conditions for seed growth.
Planting
We are very lucky in Esker ETNS to have a beautiful fairy garden designed and created by the Gardening Club. In this fairy garden there are a number of beds that each class uses throughout the year to put their ordering, analysing, recording and planting skills to work and sometimes if they're lucky they even get to eat what they have grown!
Maths Trails
As part of Maths Week, Junior Infants & Senior Infants took part in a maths trail in the yard searching for shapes and numbers.
