Senior Infants had a wonderful day having lots of fun and making memories in Explorium on the 26th of June. There was so much to see and do, one of the favourites was the tyre slide!

Garda Alan from Pearse St. Station was back with us again this year to talk with us about keeping the community safe! We tried on some uniforms and asked him lots of questions!
Everybody meet Sunny, Chiquitita and Conor McEggor! quickly The first sign of hatching is called 'pipping'. This is when the chicks use their egg tooth to crack the egg from the inside! They spin around inside the egg until they have cracked the whole way around the egg and then they make their way out into the world! If you listen carefully you might even hear the chicks cheeping! The egg tooth quickly falls off - hence the saying 'as scarce as hens teeth!'. When the chicks were born, their feathers were still very wet and they stayed in the incubator to dry out. It got a little cramped before they made the big move into the brood box! Their feathers had to completely dry off and puff up before they could leave the incubator. It didn't take too long before they were ready to make the big move into the brood box with a heating pad and everything they would need to keep growing! Chicks in the egg have absorbed all the nutrients from the yolk before they hatch and so they do not need food or water for the first day or so. We wasted no time giving them lots of cuddles and attention! We were absolutely thrilled to be a part of the incubation project! We will be sad to see the chicks go back to the farm but they were great members of our class if not a little 'chirpy!'
We ended the year of 2022 on a high with our fantastic performance of Blitzen's Boogie! We were learning all about the doctor's surgery for the month of January. We were very lucky to have so many visitors join us in the classroom to teach us all about their jobs in hospitals, nursing homes and doctor's surgeries. We had lots of fun exploring this topic.
For the month of November we learned all about what happens on the construction site. We learned about the different types of houses that could be built on the construction site. We built our using Lego. We also became architects and designed our own buildings, became builders who followed those careful designs and customers who bought the buildings all in the role play area. We made beautiful art inspired by the story of The Three Little Pigs, and used some recycled materials to construct from our imagination. We learned how to use Bee Bots for the first time and celebrated Mother Tongue week with the whole school.
Have a look at some of the fun activities we did during the month of October! We learned all about the Supermarket as part of our Play time theme. We read the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and created some beautiful art during play time too. We went on nature walks in small groups and with our friends from 6th class green. We had lots of fun learning about how our environment changes during the season of autumn. Finally, we learned about the festival of Halloween which is celebrated in Ireland and around the world on October 31st. We could dress up for Halloween on Friday 28th October if we wanted. We did a parade around the school to show off our costumes and had a party to celebrate all our hard work we've done in our first two months in Esker! Each morning children line up outside from 9:10. I collect the class at 9.20 and we walk into school to start our fine motor activities. The children have a different activity each morning. These activities help with handwriting skills, fine motor development and hand-eye coordination. At 9:45 we take the rolla to see who is in school that day. After we have a chat together as part of our circle time. We tell and listen to stories, jokes and news from one another. We sing songs and nursery rhymes together, play a game to develop our phonological awareness and take part in a movement break (eg. Yoga, dancing, stretching or exercising). Next, we have literacy stations at our tables. Each group works together at a literacy based activity (2 teacher led and 3 independent). These activities change each day and are very interactive! After playing outside for little break, the children come back to the classroom and eat their small snack and piece of fruit from Carambola. These snacks are distributed each morning by Barry our caretaker. Ansin, tá sé am-Gaeilge! Oibrimid le chéile chun foghlam faoi téamaí difriúila gach coicis. Tá na ranganna Gaeilge múineadh trí amhráin, dánnta, cluichí, cómhrá, aithris agus athrá i Naíonáin Bheaga. Tá Gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúl úsáidte againn i rith an lae chun frásaí agus grammadach úsáideach a cleachtadh chomh maith. Is aoibhinn linn an Ghaeilge sa rang seo! Then, it's time for Irish! We work together to learn about different topics each fortnight. Irish lessons are taught through songs, poems, games, discussions, repetition and revision in Junior Infants. Informal Irish is practiced throughout the day to familiarise the children with useful phrases and grammar. We love Irish in this class! Next is the best part of the day.... Time for play! This is where our themed learning takes place through games, play based activities and child led fun. The children learn about Science, History, Geography, Art, Drama, STEM, Maths and Languages during this time. Our themes change each month. For the month of September it was 'The Home'. The play activities rotate every day so that each child completes all activities in a week. This is a time when important life skills including problem solving, communication, imagination, planning, reflection, critical thinking, sharing and turn taking are happening in the classroom. The children love this time of the day and so do the teachers! After play time, the children work together to tidy up the classroom and discuss what they did during the play time. This is when ideas are shared and the children really learn from one another! After all that learning it's time for big break! The children play outside in their yard area and on days when it is too wet, they take part in indoor exercise breaks. The hot lunches from Carambola arrive at 12:30 and children eat together in class while chatting or listening to a story, nursery rhymes or music. Everyone helps to clean up by scraping their hot food into the correct bins afterwards (red for compostable items, green for the tinfoil trays). In the afternoon the children complete numeracy activities at their tables. At this stage in the day they are very tired so after Maths activities it's time to tidy up, relax and get ready for the weekly story. Reading is so important for children and we read a story every day to develop a love of reading in the classroom. The children love to recognise patterns, make predictions and notice new information or pictures each day. This is a time to calm down, relax and enjoy a book together. After the story the children line up and get ready to go home for the day. Although the day is short, we manage to squeeze in lots of learning and fun during the day! Hi Everyone! Welcome to Junior Infants Green! :) In September we were so excited to meet all of the fantastic children starting in Esker for the first time! The children lined up with their families and loved ones on the green spots for the first time and were warmly welcomed into the building with a round of applause and a team of smiling faces! They very bravely walked in with their schoolbags and entered their new school for the first time. They settled in quickly as they met their new teachers and classmates. We sang songs, played games, practised nursery rhymes and learned lots about one another! It was lots of fun!! Check out our First Week of School Pictures in the video below! |
