5th class Green and 5th class Red hosted their parents this morning for our 2nd STEMpathy showcase. STEMpathy uses Science, Technology,Engineering and Maths to improve the lives of all people in society. It marries the STEM science skills with empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. The children had already conducted experiments in the class to help them to develop their own empathy. Then each group created a super-hero character from the future and created a design aimed to help their character to overcome some obstacle or disability. The children refined their projects and created a prototype of their design. The parents were invited to watch a movie made by the children which explained how they came upon their projects and discussed some of their design decisions. Parents could see the hard work (and the fun) that went into the creation of these Design Thinking projects and prototypes. The children linked their designs to one of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development which we are also studying as part of our Learn Together Curriculum. We were bowled over by the quality of the calibre of design projects and prototypes and by the enthusiasm of the children and their parents. Well done to all involved , especially to teachers Niamh and Komeera and SNA Elaine for all their hard work. And of course a huge thank you to Gerry and Lucy, our STEM partners and lecturers from Technological University Dublin Tallaght (TUDT) for their support and hard work with our projects
